Ways to get new customers
Six methods, what each really costs, and how long the first result takes.

What are the ways to get new customers?
Ways of winning customers split in two: those that wait for demand and those that go looking for it. Advertising, search visibility and referrals belong to the first group; direct email, phone and events to the second. For a company with a small budget the second group pays off faster, because the result depends on how many people you reach and that number is in your hands.
In short
- Methods divide into waiting for demand and going after it.
- Going after demand pays off faster because you control the volume.
- Acquisition cost is money spent divided by customers won, and your own hours count as money.
- Running more than two methods at once makes it impossible to tell which one works.
Methods that wait for demand
Here the customer finds you: ranking in search, paid advertising, publishing on social accounts and referrals from existing customers.
They share one trait: slow to build, cheap once built. They also share one difficulty, which comes from the same place. The first three months usually produce nothing, and three months is longer than most small companies can hold their nerve.
Methods that go after demand
Here you go to them: direct email, phone calls, trade shows and partnerships.
They share one trait: the first result arrives within weeks and you set the volume. They also share one risk: done badly they damage the brand, done well they are the cheapest channel available.
- Direct email: 50 companies a week, first meeting typically in two to three weeks.
- Phone: fastest feedback, highest burnout.
- Trade shows: expensive, but trust is built in a single conversation.
- Partnerships: mutual referrals with a company selling to the same buyer without competing.
Which one fits your business?
Three questions decide it: how much you earn per customer, how many people are involved in the decision, and how long the sale takes to close.
High value per customer and a decision made by a few people points to direct email and phone. Low value and a large pool of buyers points to search visibility and advertising.

Three agents run the part of these steps that repeats every week: defining the audience, building the list, writing each email for the person, and following up on the reply.
Working out acquisition cost
The formula is simple: what you spent on a channel in a period, divided by the customers it won. Count your own hours as spend; leave them out and manual channels look cheaper than they are.
Compare that number with what a customer is worth to you. If acquisition cost is more than a third of what a customer pays in the first year, the channel is not sustainable.
How many methods at once?
Two at most. Run three and you cannot tell which one worked, so the budget sits in a dead channel for months.
A sensible order: start with a method that gives fast feedback and build a slow one in parallel. Direct email is the cheapest example of the first group, search visibility of the second.
Common questions
Referrals from existing customers. The cost is close to zero, but the volume is not in your control, which is why referrals alone cannot be a growth channel.
Two to four weeks for direct email, one to two weeks for advertising, three to six months for search visibility. The exact numbers vary by business; the order does not.
After at least a hundred contacts through the same method. Fewer than that and the result can be explained by chance, and abandoning early usually means closing the channel that was about to work.
